The Iowa Democratic Party Debate: How Did CNN Do?

We know the Democrats are doing fine with their popular candidates. This Iowa Democratic debate left people criticizing the reckless way CNN handled it. If I wanted to hear enemy talking points and read them on the labels I’d watch Fox. This was something more sinister than playing devil’s advocate or applying balance. When it comes to the security of the voting system, there’s no both sides do it. There’s only who is undermining democracy for political profit.

I totally expected CNN to try to stir up drama. Not out of bias, they live only to attract ears, along with the eyeballs per minute. If anyone was going to seek out wedge issues and divide the top runners, CNN would. They repeatedly said stuff in the lead up to program how you should expect a fight between Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The teapot tempest had to do with how Sanders staff scripts for phone canvassing were interpreted by the Warren staff. Neither candidate was involved, but that didn’t stop CNN from dragging them into it.

The other fight I’m expecting is Bernie going negative on Biden’s war authorization votes over Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe Buttigieg might bring it up since he served in the navy. In my mind, his naval Intelligence history associates him people I trusted like Malcolm Nance and Bill Cooper.

It’s just the sort of lame manipulation and shallow perspective that CNN has mastered. They want to damage as many democratic candidates as possible when they touch upon their corporate masters. CNN has never been a “liberal media” outlet. It only got that rap from right wingers because Jane Fonda married Ted Turner, who is retired.

Each candidate had their way to work around the sophomoric questions.

Bernie’s and Elizabeth’s supporters are basically, the same core democratic base liberals. The only difference is the Warren faction is a natural net for females leaving more males in the Bernie camp as a logical result of subtraction. Thus it creates an appearance of women tending away from Bernie. However, they will be back to vote for Bernie if he is nominated instead.

Women’s most personal rights are at stake, body privacy, child care and equal pay. All issues that Republicans use to hinder their upward mobility. Bernie Bros and Warren Women aren’t flipping Republican unless a paperless ballot system does it as part of the GOP’s dirty tricks.

Anybody talking about converting Trump’s supporters is wasting our time and effort. We don’t want or need those votes. Excluding the uninformed and some first-time voters the Trump voters that think they are informed have backed themselves into a societal corner. They are too small a demographic to be concerned with, maybe 20% of all potential voters in 2020. The commentary says that the movements that Sanders and Warren have are required to counteract the Trumpster movement. However that is really a mobilization of an existing base. They totally forgot that Tom Steyer literally stated a movement years ago with Need To Impeach. A CNN snub of an authentic example of what they think they’re reporting about. Typical.

One unusual thing for this Iowa Caucus is the existence of 4 front runners within 6 points of each other. Usually is only 2 by this point. The debate panel had the 4 leaders Biden, Sanders, Warren and Buttigeig (boot-te-‘judge) flanked by second stringers, Steyer and Klobuchar.

The ads

The worst ad they ran, on 1/3 the commercial breaks, was an anti single payer ad, I couldn’t read the name of the sponsor in the fine print. Some ironic name like the front groups usually use. It involved insurance industry scare tactics in a working class veneer. The hook was no one size fits all health care. Got that already with my HMO. Change is not as scary as the status quo under Trump. Then each break contained drug ads, liberal non-profit org ads, small business products, movie ads, Maryville online university. There was an ad I liked about enforcing laws that should prevent employers from hiring undocumented and fake documented workers with ID E-Verify.

As far as judging a candidate’s ability to debate against Trump and Campaign against Trump, I say it’s a dumb question. A ham sandwich can win against that poorly spoken fool. Winning the Presidency will be all about the youth vote, overcoming the dirty tricks at the ballot box. I predict i will take an extra margin of around 20% to win in spite of Republican Secretaries of State cheating. The great untold crime story that’s continued for 3 decades now. Democrats don’t need to cheat. History has proved that the more people who vote, the better the dems do.

I think these candidates and commentators alike are fixating on Donald Trump too much. This is not just a campaign against trump, but against the whole Republican party for being complicit in a plot to destroy democracy and install a pseudo christian oligarchy disguised as a theocracy. If we Democrats can’t hammer home the thought that Trump is not an aberration, but a logical outgrowth of what Republican elites want. Then Trump is the party and the party is Trump.

What we are experiencing is the country being run by the agenda of extreme right-wing talk radio shows. CNN is lame because it’s sensationalist. Right wing radio is a dangerous bubble of alternate reality made to generate and maintain easily hacked minds. To focus on Trump alone is a set up to get clobbered down-ticket.

I want to hear the candidates speak in opposition to the Republican party, whose figurehead is Trump. Because we need to be prepared for the possibility that Trump won’t be there for the campaign.

The Debate

The start had Joe apparently unaware that his microphone was on. The leaned over to Bernie and said, “Be careful on Iran.” Bernie just shined it on. The first question out of the box was about if they were qualified to be Commander In Chief. It was framed with CNN’s forgone conclusion that we will be at war during the next Presidency. CNN starts out trying to spin war as a foregone conclusion for this debate. Bernie, re-framed the question as whether we would need to go to war as the true measure of leadership.

Then Wolf Blitzer launches into the question of Joe Biden’s war authorization votes. That was good as it took the negative attack out of the mouths of the candidates. Joe took this opportunity to say he regretted trusting the Bush’s with our military. His mea culpa was the right answer. But he’s just not that well spoken, even if way superior to Trump.

Klobuchar, bangs under control, came on strong, but was a bit pushy about grabbing extra time. She also gave he right answer as the rest did that it’s most important to keep the troops safe and respect their service by not squandering it. Refreshing after 4 Republicans in a row using our soldiers for political, not military campaigns. WarrenÂ and Steyer decried the power of the military-industrial complex. Buttigieg, who served, took it as an opportunity to call out Trump’s international failures.

Steyer would prevent war with good trade relationships and consensus building against non-state actors. That’s just how any good democrat would do it. Obama’s Joint Iran nuclear deal was a successful negotiation with allies and opponents in the world. I’m not convinced we require Biden to restore our relationships around the globe. A ham sandwich could do that.

The military deployment issue got mixed results from the left who want full return of the troops like absolutist Warren. Compared to those who would replace them with an appropriate Special Forces contingent for counter-terrorism and training. Either answer works for me as long as we sop stamping through the third world like it was all a big crack house to be raided. Warren had the bottom line answer to which all agreed. We have to stop using our military to address problems that can’t be solved militarily. Buttigieg again attacked Trump for failing with ISIS while claiming victory. Biden’s not a war pig and reminded us that he cut his teeth politically by opposing the Vietnam war. He’s all about the informed consent of the people. He suggested a 3 year sunset clause be applied to any military expedition.

I like that Pete is a great team player, Tom too. They follow the tradition of Democratic Party debates as each showcases different elements of the Party platform. Warren criticized the Generals who keep telling her they’ve turned a corner on war until they’re going around in circles.

Then they asked about Iran nukes. The whole panel took t as a chance to point out Trump’s errors in Iran and North Korea that only an idiot like him would make. All the candidates were unified about the need to get off fossil fuels with renewable energy.

Well, here we go. CNN couldn’t help themselves. They had to drop the misogyny question on Bernie in a way designed to trigger a fight. Bernie said directly, “Hilary Clinton won the popular vote by 3 million votes. How could anybody , in a million years, not believe that a woman could not become President,” which was the right answer. It threw shade on CNN for asking. Warren and Klobuchar beat down the question as well. The women showed they can win this election.

Amy never lost an election and the Republican’ts she beat all left the public life. She’s a GOP Stopper! Bernie’s victory plan is to have the greatest get-out-the-vote campaign ever.

Then CNN posed the question of how universal health care would be paid for. The answer is with less money than we waste on insurance premiums, co-pays, and hand outs to drug companies. I prefer to rip off the band-aid of health insurance rather than an incremental approach that will hurt all along the way even if superior to the pain and death caused by the status quo.

Partial approaches included restoring Obamacare, which Obama thought was a pragmatic compromise from his actual goal of single payer. Also transitioning with a non-profit public option insurance. You can’t solve this in stages of timid baby steps. The insurance companies are the real problem in this, not the cost of care. I want my President to deal with this head on.

CNN parroted Biden’s line that Bernie would double the US budget, but hey. We’re supposed to be a growing country. It’s the Republican’ts who insist we still wear our high school clothes way into adulthood. It would be nice if we had a budget that wasn’t mostly war toys. Here’s your savings. No premiums, no co-pays, no out of network, no gotcha charges, no delayed diagnosis, no huge executive salaries, no insurance denials of big bills, GET IT?!

In the rest of the modern world, health insurance the way we have it here is illegal. Steyer pointed out that the health care insurance and drug corporations run health care system, not the people. It’s cruelty for profit!

After another question that was actually a Republican small government talking point, they move on to child care. Lack of child care is a burden that keeps many women from being upwardly mobile. Warren lived that experience. getting near the end of this debate the panel pushed for more time, except for Biden. He got a big laugh saying he prefers to stay within his time.

I think a lot of young voters wish Mayor Pete could be like a young Bernie Sanders. Unfortunately he is not a revolutionary, has less racial bona fides, and his small steps may lead to a lot of unfinished policy changes that won’t survive to be a legacy. A young Bernie Sanders with some federal office experience could win this contest hands down. Sadly the candidates like that got washed out due to lack of funding.

Asking about impeachment, CNN wonders if a “vindicated” Trump would be unbeatable. Biden verbally stumbled, Klobuchar came prepared with an Iowan anecdote. Steyer organized 8.5 million Americans to turn the tide of opinion toward impeaching Trump.

Climate change was discussed over the backdrop of Iowans still not able to return to their flooded homes. Steyer came out on top as one to prioritize agricultural and industrial improvements and a return to the global community approach. CNN used bad framing about the difficulty of moving away industries from climate damage zones, to make a straw-man argument posing as a question. The issue was managed retreat, which happens naturally if a brick and mortar business get washed down steam.

Since Democrats are in a unified position of the climate, they each covered a different aspect of climate and energy policies. Back to showcasing. To turn it negative again CNN hit Buttigieg with the blacks don’t like you stick. Blacks will still vote for him except maybe the tightly churched-up ones. What’s going on with religion being weaponized by the Republicans is a true apostasy.

A real Christian in America must understand that you don’t go to Caesar for a king’s solution to the inability to end pre-marital sex, abortion, gay rights and religious dominance by evangelism alone. For the un-churched, “Caesar” means appeal to the government for enforcement, at gunpoint if needed. Jumping into bed with Trump will not end well for eternity. It’s like praying for peace in the Temple of Mars.

Then CNN claims 2/3 of a poll says people don’t like the word socialist. Another red-hat talking point. Well, the youth did not grow up with red scare brainwashing about conflated socialism and communism. They know we didn’t fight the Cold War against communism. The promise of communism was a marketing ploy that never was successfully implemented anywhere in a group of over 20 people.Â What we had to fight against was the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. A totalitarian state that never would have given the consented power back even if the workers of the world were united.

CNN asked about defeating Trump in a debate. A Ham sandwich could win.

Trump loses every debate, but that never matters to his campaign. is base is a cult of followers. There’s twice as many young people who can vote than there are of them. I don’t like Amy’s defeatist attitude toward universal health care. As the final statements wrap this democratic debate on CNN up, I’ll reward those candidates who had the presence of mind to plug their websites. So I’ll repeat them now.
