My fellow resisting American,
You’ve been with me from the beginning, so I wanted you to be among the first to know about my plans. Seven years ago, I took a step away from my business to focus more of my time and resources on fighting climate change, working for racial justice, and helping secure better lives for all Americans. I believed then that America was a place where any person could start a movement to make our country better, stronger, and more fair.
What’s preventing us from addressing the challenges facing our country isn’t our differences, but our broken politics. Until we get rid of the corrupting influence of corporate money on our democracy, we won’t be able to address climate change, make our economy more just and fair, or make health care affordable and accessible.
Then my dad interrupted his law career to join the Navy and prosecute Nazis at Nuremberg. My mom was a journalist and teacher who tutored prisoners in city jail. Together, my parents taught me that actions speak louder than words. While our leaders in Washington, D.C. may say the right things on occasion, they’ve handed control of our democracy over to special interests and corporations.
So if they won’t take action, we will. We’ll register millions more voters, flip the U.S. Senate, and campaign across the country — all to give the power back to you.
Thank you,
Tom Steyer
